Methyl Salicylate IP

Methyl Salicylate is an organic ester naturally produced by many species of plants, particularly wintergreens. It is also synthetically produced, used as a fragrance, in foods and beverages, and in liniments.


Methyl salicylate, in high concentrations as a rubefacient and analgesic in deep heating liniments (such as Bengay) to treat joint and muscular pain. In low concentrations (0.04% and under) as a flavoring agent in chewing gum and mints

(b)Specified test. The precipitate after drying at 105° for 1 hour melts at 156° to 161°.

Solubility It is miscible with chloroform, with ethanol (96 %) and with fixed volatile oils; very slightly soluble in water.
Appearance of solution The solution is clear and not more intensely colored than the reference solution YS7.
Acidity Not more than 0.4 ml of 0.1 M Sodium Hydroxide required.

Shelf life, Storage and Packing
It should be stored in a segregated area in a cool and ventilated place away from combustible materials. Keep in a tightly closed container, sealed until ready for use. It is packed in 25kg or 50kg HDPE bags or drums as required.
